thanとtoを用いる比較
通常、「～より…」という比較を表す時、
比較級＋than … という形を用いますが、
ここでは、toを用いる比較表現について
例文を用いて解説します。

- junior to（= younger than）

prefer to（= better than）
prefer ～ to … で、
「…より～を好む」という
意味になります。
以下は、例文です。
I prefer dogs to cats.
「私は、猫より犬が好きです。」
これは、比較級＋thanを用いた
以下の文と同じ意味になります。
I like dogs better than cats.
junior to（= younger than）
junior to … で、
「…より年下」という
意味になります。
以下は、例文です。
He is junior to me.
「彼は、私より年下です。」
toの後ろは目的格（この場合me）になり、
以下のように主格のIは置けません。
×He is junior to I.
上の例文は、比較級＋thanを用いた
以下の文と同じ意味になります
He is younger than I.
そして、これらの表現で、
「彼は、私より２歳年下です。」と
年齢差を表したい場合があります。
これを表す２通りの表現があり、
１つ目の表現は比較級の前に年齢差を
そのまま置いて以下のようになります。
He is two years junior to me.
He is two years younger than I.
もう１つの表現では、以下の例文のように
byを用いて年齢差を文の最後に置きます。
He is junior to me by two years.
He is younger than I by two years.
senior to（= older than）
senior to … で、
「…より年上」という
意味になります。
以下は、例文です。
He is senior to me.
「彼は、私より年上です。」
これは、比較級＋thanを用いた
以下の文と同じ意味になります。
He is older than I.
この場合も２と同様に、
「彼は、私より２歳年上です。」
というように年齢差を表したい時は
以下の４つの表現を用います。
He is two years senior to me.
He is two years older than I.
He is senior to me by two years.
He is older than I by two years.
superior to（= better than）
superior to … で、
「…より優れている」という
意味になります。
以下は、例文です。
This car is superior to that one.
「この車は、あの車より優れている。」
これは、比較級＋thanを用いた
以下の文と同じ意味になります。
This car is better than that one.
inferior to（= worse than）
inferior to … で、
「…より劣っている」という
意味になります。
以下は、例文です。
This car is inferior to that one.
「この車は、あの車より劣っている。」
これは、比較級＋thanを用いた
以下の文と同じ意味になります。
This car is worse than that one.
prior to
prior to … で、
「…より前に」「…より先に」
という意味になります。
以下は、例文です。
The day when the affair happened was prior to my birthday.
「その事件が起きた日は、私の誕生日より前だった。」
＝「その事件は、私の誕生日より前に起きた。」
